Discover Basingstoke and Deane’s past, from the rich archaeological heritage beneath our feet right up to the modern day.

The Sainsbury Gallery hosts exhibitions from National galleries and museums, while the Basingstoke Gallery on the first floor hosts the work of local artists, groups and societies. This gallery has restored to reveal many original features, creating a top quality space for community exhibitions.

Drop into stunning Café Willis which serves a range of Mozzo coffee, speciality teas and locally made cakes and pastries. Our gift shop is the perfect place to find a special gift for a friend – or a treat for yourself! We stock a regularly changing selection of locally made crafts, ceramics and jewellery that you won’t find on the High Street, plus a selection of beautiful greetings cards and products, many reflecting the theme of our temporary exhibitions. We also specialise in selling items about the history of the Basingstoke area, including books, maps, local guides and DVDs.

Throughout the year we run events and activities suitable for all ages. Keep an eye on our website to find out about forthcoming exhibitions and events.

Proteus

proteus
Located on Council Road, Proteus Creation Space is a dynamic creative hub in the heart of Basingstoke, based in a beautiful Grade II listed building.

We host a variety of regular classes and workshops, covering a wide range of topics from arts and crafts to performance and wellbeing. We also host theatre shows, events and exhibitions, catering to a broad range of needs and tastes.

You can hire the Creation Space for your function, exhibition, meeting or event. We have a variety of rooms including a gorgeous light and spacious gallery, a multi-functional performance space and mirrored dance studio, a large general purpose meeting space and art studios. We can even help you organise your party, with our dedicated in-house professional party planner!

The Creation Space Café serves light lunches, coffee and cake, using seasonal produce sourced from local suppliers. We offer a range of gluten free options every day.

The Creation Space is the home of Proteus Theatre Company, for the creation of its touring work and many of Proteus’ participatory projects as well as a space for emerging artists in all disciplines to develop their full potential.

We create three professional productions each year; a family show touring in the winter, a production for adult audiences touring in either the spring or autumn and a Christmas show for pre-school children and their families, which is performed at the Creation Space. We also champion new and emerging artists and work as co-producers for a number of smaller companies who have work available ‘off the shelf’.
